What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne is a perennial problem especially for women, with its sudden appearance and the lasting scars that it causes. Irrespective of your dislike for it, acne can not be escaped by an average teenager and considerable care is required in order to remove these scars and preventing them from sprouting up again.

Acne is an infection caused by the reaction of bacteria and too much of sebum secretion by the glands in the skin. During the healing process of this infection, a fibrous protein called collagen is generated. When the collagen is in surplus, there is a swelling and when its levels are below normal then it results in tiny craters on the skin. Acne scars develop in both these situations. Adolescents usually suffer more than others because the levels of hormones increase at a high rate at the time of puberty leading to increased release of sebum.

Some of the general reasons behind an acne infection are application of cosmetic products that are not suitable for the skin type, using contraceptive pills and drugs, and other genetic factors. A number of other reasons such as mental tension, improper food habits, and even pollution can cause acne. But as against what a majority of people believe, researchers have not found any connection between spicy food and acne.

Notwithstanding the range of herbal products that claim to heal acne and that are being sold to consumers at different shops, it is advisable to get medical opinion if the situation gets worse or if it keeps on recurring. It is also advisable not to pierce the acne with sharp- edged objects or to press it as it makes the acne get worse.

Many sufferers now go for many cosmetic procedures to make the marks disappear and regain a glowing skin. Surgical procedures and laser treatment are among the most successful ways of permanently getting rid of acne scars, but several other innovative treatments are also available nowadays. You should consult a good dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon who can assess the skin type you possess and recommend a suitable treatment.
